ACT Overview

The ACT test is a curriculum and standards based educational and career planning tool that assesses students’ academic readiness for college level studies. The ACT exam is conducted 7 times per year in India. The exam is conducted in the months of September, October, December, February, April, June, and July.

It is administered by ACT, Inc. It is a standardized test that is required to be taken by students looking for admission to undergraduate schools based majorly in the US and Canada.

Types Of ACT Test Exam

ACT as Pen & paper test (Testing Center)

  • It is a paper-and-pencil test. You will write your essay in pencil (no mechanical pencils or ink pens) on the lined pages of an answer folder that will be provided to you.

ACT as Computer Delivered (Outside US only)

  • The ACT consists of four multiple-choice tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science. Computer based exam started in 2021.

The ACT consists of four multiple-choice tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science. The four multiple-choice sections contain 215 questions and take 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete. After the mathematics test, you will be given a 15-minute break. If you take the optional writing test you will have 40 minutes to complete the essay and will receive an additional 5-minute break before the writing portion begins.

ACT Syllabus

English :

  • The test consists of five essays or passages each of which is accompanied by a sequence of Multiple-choice, test questions. Six elements of effective writing are included in the English Test: unctuation, grammar and usage, sentence structure, strategy, organization and style.

Mathematics :

  • Test designed to assess the mathematical skills students have typically acquired in courses taken up to the beginning of grade 12.

Reading :

  • The test questions ask you to derive meaning from several texts by referring to what is explicitly stated and by reasoning to determine implicit meaning.

Science :

  • It measures the interpretation, analysis, evaluation, reasoning, and problem-solving skills required in biology, chemistry, Earth/space sciences and physics. You are not permitted to use a calculator on the science test.

Writing :

  • It measures your writing skills taught in high school English classes and in entry-level college composition courses. This section is optional.

ACT Scoring

Each section has a test score range of 1 – 36:

  • Below Average Score Range: 1-16
  • Average Score Range: 17-24
  • Above Average Score Range: 25-36
